Sonik Synth™ 2 tutorial #1

Creating a moving pad
In this tutorial we will create a swirling, moving pad using a combination of multiple synth textures and the combi saving features of Sonik Synth 2. To begin, open up Sonik Synth 2 Free and browse to the included free soundset.

PART 1:

On part one, select SuperSweep JP. Play the sound. Notice this sound already has some movement in it. We are going to adjust it some.

Under the synth edit buttons, click FILTER. Adjust the filter to the following settings:

CUTOFF - 2.2kHz
RES - 0.3

Now click the LFO2 button [pict. 01] and change it’s parameters to:

SPEED - 0.3 Hz
DEPTH – 36
FILTER - 3.5

This will create a little more movement of the sound.

Under the ENV1 edit menu [pict. 02], change the following parameters:

ATTACK - 3.3 sec
DECAY - 469 ms
Release - 483 ms

Our original patch “SuperSweep JP” is now a little slower and darker than it once was.

PART 2:

Let’s move to PART 2. Mute PART 1 in the MIX window, so we can focus our attention to the changes made to PART 2. Before selecting a preset, change PART 2’s channel assignment (CH.) to 1. This will allow us to play both the first sound and this sound together. It is possible to change all sixteen parts to one channel, if so desired. Let’s work on the sound now.

Select “Silky Pianopad”. Change the following parameters:

Under ENV1
ATTACK - 1.3 sec

Under the FILTER parameters [pict. 03]:

FREQ - 3.1kHz
RES - 4.7
SLOPE – 24

This makes the patch a little brighter. Let’s use ENV2 to move the filter’s cutoff frequency [pict. 04]. Set ENV2 to the following parameters:

ATTACK – 3.5 s
HOLD – 24.5 ms
DECAY – 6.1 s
SUSTAIN – -89
RELEASE – 12.5 s
FILTER – -6.3

In the VEL synth edit panel, Change the FILTER knob to 2. Now the Silky Pianopad is a much more synthetic silky pad sound with a lot less piano than the original preset.

PART 3:

Select Perc Organ Sv for Preset 3 [pict. 05]. Mute the other two presets so that we can focus on the changes to this one. We will change several things about this sound. So we will list them by synth parameter panel.

ENV1
ATTACK – 2.1 s
DECAY – 1.6 s
SUSTAIN – -41 dB
RELEASE – 4.4s

LFO2
SPEED – 0.4 Hz
DEPTH – 62
FILTER – 3.6

FILTER [pict. 06]
Type – BPF
FREQ – 2.6kHz
RES – 0.3

Once these parameters are changed, we will change some effects for this sound. Change the Effect slot that says Reverb to Phaser. Change the Phaser parameters to:

RATE – 39
STAGES – 8
DEPTH – 34
FEEDBACK – 16

Now, select reverb for the next effects slot.

Unmute the two other presets. Play our combi preset back. We now have a wall of moving, swirling sound. As you can see, this form of preset creation is very powerful. Now to save you creation simple click the SAVE button at the bottom of the MIXER view. Name it whatever you like and recall this sound from the Combi menu (the black triangle) at the top center of the interface [pict. 07].

This is just one example of the flexibility of Sonik Synth 2. Experiment with other sounds. Try other effects. Use the envelopes to create even more movement. With the intense number of features in Sonik Synth 2, the sonic possibilities are almost Endless.
